EUROPE DAY CELEBRATED IN MIAMI [fr]

PNGOn May 9, French Consul General Laurent Gallissot and German Consul General Andreas Siegel, together with the Florida Chapter of the European American Chamber of Commerce, celebrate “Europe Day” one of the most important dates in Europe’s contemporary history.

May 9 commemorates the historical Declaration made by then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950, proposing to place French and German production of steel and coal under a single authority that would make war impossible between the two countries and would gradually create the conditions for a political integration of the European continent. Eventually, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Italy also participated in this innovative and unprecedented project, which later developed into the European Union, with its 27 Member States today.

In the gardens of the French Consul’s residence in Coral Gables, guests from the Consular Corps, authorities, academics institutions, and business communities will celebrate European peace and unity in Florida, where over half a million European citizens live.

A few days ago, European and American leaders, together with the Atlantic Council (NGO/Think Tank), met at the EU Future Forum to shape the new transatlantic agenda in this period of global recovery and growth. Young representatives of civil society are actively working together to face our common challenges and find the best path to promote security, recovery and prosperity.

The Joint Communication “New EU-US agenda for global change" -added below as a pdf- and the Council Conclusions on EU-US relations from December 2020 laid down the framework for a renewed engagement with the new US administration. President Biden’s initial decisions, including re-joining the Paris Agreement, reversing the withdrawal from the WHO, reengaging with the UN Human Rights Council, and withdrawing sanctions on the International Criminal Court, were tangible signs of the US’ commitment to re-engage with partners and Allies.

Visibly, the Transatlantic Partnership is thriving: from Space exploration to protecting planet Earth, the EU-US cooperation is back on track, for the benefit of both sides of the Atlantic.

On this occasion,

French Consul, Laurent Gallissot states: “The European Union is a partner of the future in Florida, especially for re-launching tourism and developing a greener economy that is environmental friendly.”

German Consul, Andreas Siegel states: “EU-US partnership is the single most important driver of global economic growth, trade and prosperity. Europe Day reminds us that this is based on a community of values, too: the concept of European integration and a common commitment to human rights, democracy and the rule of law has been instrumental in rebuilding a vibrant Europe and in preserving peace for more than seven decades by now.”
