The Mysteries of Jacques le Moyne de Morgues - revealed! [fr]
At 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 26th, 2019, special guests including Miles Harvey, award winning journalist and author of "Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime" and "Painter in a Savage Land: The Strange Saga of the First European Artist in North America" will exchange about the 1st European settlements in Florida, the very first being the French in 1562!
The theme: "Mapmaker, illustrator and explorer Jacques le Moyne de Morgues left behind a fascinating visual and written record of Native American life in 16th century Florida. But the life, career and adventures of this exceptional artist are shrouded in mystery. Who was he? What was he doing in Florida? And what became of the French fort where he lived? In his keynote talk, bestselling author Miles Harvey looks at the many intriguing mysteries surrounding the first European artist in North America."
On Saturday, the public is also invited to visit the newly updated Gallery displaying the prized Le Moyne/De Bry Collection of engravings, which gives us the first European look of Native Americans in what is now Florida.
