In March, major events focus on the European Union [fr]

The month of March is going to be a busy one for the Miami Florida European Union Center of Excellence (MEUCE), a consortium of Florida International University and the University of Miami.

The mission of the Miami-Florida EUCE, is to promote teaching, research, and outreach activities relating to the EU.

This upcoming month, starting on the 3rd, the MEUCE plans on accomplishing this mission through a series of academic conferences, French Films, public lectures featuring EU speakers and the annual Euro Challenge Competition.


The events, listed below, are all free and open to the public.

  • On Monday March 3rd, a first event took place: the conference
    “Leadership: Do French & U.S. Approaches Differ?”.

This program was organized by the Department of Public Administration, Institute for Public Management and Community Service and École Nationale d’Administration and co-sponsored by the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, and Ruth K. and Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series.

EURO Challenge Competition

The Euro Challenge is an exciting educational opportunity for high school students (grade 9 and 10) to learn about the European Union (EU) and the euro.

Student teams of three to five students are asked to make presentations answering specific questions about the European economy and the single currency, the euro.

They are also asked to pick one member country of the Euro zone (the 18 EU member countries that have adopted the euro so far), to examine an economic problem at the country level, and to identify policies for responding to that problem.

The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence at Florida International University is the recruiter in Florida for the Euro Challenge Competition. This is the 7th year in which the Preliminary Round-Competition will take place at Florida International University.

MEUCE Videoconference with University of Pittsburgh
Conversations on Europe: “The Thorn and the Thistle in Europe’s Side?”

This year, the EUCE at the University of Pittsburgh is organizing a virtual roundtable series on “ Conversations on Europe”.
The MEUCE at FIU, along with other European Union Centers of Excellence from the U. S Network, will be participating.
It will connect the participants with experts on Europe via videoconference to discuss the topic above.

MEUCE European Film Series: “Kolya” (Czech)

Synopsis: Franta Louka is a concert cellist in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, a confirmed bachelor and a lady’s man. Having lost his place in the state orchestra, he must make ends meet by playing at funerals and painting tombstones. But he has run up a large debt, and when his friend, the grave-digger Mr. Broz, suggests a scheme for making a lot of money by marrying a Russian woman so that she can get her Czech papers, he reluctantly agrees. Upon obtaining them, she takes advantage of the situation to emigrate to West Germany to her lover; and leaves her five-year-old son with his grandmother. When his grandmother dies, Kolya must come and live with his stepfather : Louka.

MEUCE lecture “Immigration and the Radical Right in Europe” by Dr. Erica Edwards, Executive Director, Center of European Studies, European Center of Excellence, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

MEUCE-FIU welcomes Professor Erica Edwards (Phd) to give a lecture on Immigration in Europe.
She is the Executive Director of the Center of European Studies at University of North Carolina.
Her main research and teaching interests are in the fields of comparative politics, political parties and party systems, governance and politics of the European Union.

  • March 21-22nd: Annual EUCE Network Meeting

The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence at FIU will host the Annual EUCE network meeting.

This meeting will bring 10 centers of excellence from North America, where Directors and Associate Directors will exchange experiences and share ideas with the Delegation of the European Union to the US in Washington D.C.:

  • March 28th-29th: MEUCE/BILAT Workshop: “ Horizon 2020”

    Location: FIU, MMC- MARC International Pavilion

As a partner in the BILAT USA 2.0 project designed to promote EU-U.S. collaboration in science, technology, and innovation (STI), the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence is organizing a practical workshop on recent developments concerning the European Framework Program.

Two-day EU conference: “Gender and Generations”

The Miami-Florida and Wisconsin EU Centers of Excellence are co-sponsoring an academic workshop March 28-29 2014 at Florida International University on Gender and Generation in Europe.

This workshop includes leading experts on the history of gender, family and the welfare state in Europe, the demographic transition in age and family structures, and EU-level policy responses to the cross-national challenges these transitions pose.

The discussion-centered format will foster a cross-disciplinary exchange on questions including the impact of the rise and fall of the welfare state on children, youth and aging populations as well as on what the gender dimensions of historical, demographic and political changes across and between generations will imply.
