e-Toile: Hello, Stevy Mahy, the residents of Miami are very flattered to welcome you for the Fête de la Musique 2013. Is this the first time that you are going to be singing at the Little Haiti Cultural Center?

Stevy Mahy: Hello, it is indeed the first time and I’m very happy, especially for being able to perform during this special day for the music lovers.

e-Toile: For almost 30 years, June 21 has been synonymous with the Fête de la Musique, and on all the continents, but what does this date specifically mean to you?

Stevy Mahy: It’s a date that particularly resonates for me. I have memories of this day of jubilation crossing the streets of Paris to listen to the numerous music groups performing there, and I also had the chance to participate in the first edition of the Fête de la musique in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

It’s the annoncement of summer with its prize of celebration...

e-Toile: Unique and personal, your songs take on a universal character. When you write them, what do you hope to delivery as a message?

Stevy Mahy: Actually, I think that the universality that one feels comes from the fact that I nourrish myself of love to write. When one finally thinks of love, it’s the feeling that unites all of us!
I want to find that meeting place, because that’s where my whole message is: to find oneself and others.

e-Toile: Your travels, your mastery of different languages, as well as your Caribbean roots seem to guide your compositions.
Why did you choose music as the way to express yourself artistically?

Stevy Mahy: I think that I have not thought too much about it because this comes rather naturally. The music presented itself in the most obvious way to unveil who I am, sometimes in rather intimate ways.

e-Toile: Being on stage once in Miami, in front of such a diverse crowd, will you be delivering a tailored performance to such an audience?

Stevy Mahy: Yes, besides, I need to nourrish myself with the energy of the public with whom I share. Actually, I adapt myself to my public and I truly think that the moment that we will live together will be rich in beautiful emotions.

  • Starting at 8:00 pm on June 21st, musicians, singers and music lovers will be on stage at Little Haiti Cultural Center (212 NE 59th Terrace, Miami, FL 33137).
