Three WWII Veterans recognized on October 22nd by France in Boynton Beach

In the name of the French Republic, the Consul General, Mr. Gaël de Maisonneuve, will award, the insignias of “Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur”, Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor” to three U.S. veterans who fought alongside France during World War II.

The ceremony will take place in Boynton Beach on Monday October 22nd starting at 11:00 am at the Veteran’s Memorial Park.

During the ceremony, are also scheduled the unveiling of the Cuban Missile Crisis Monument and a Tribute to John F. Kennedy Memorial Bench.

The Consulate is proud to announce the recognition of

  • Mr. Matthew CALDWELL who joined the U.S. Army in January 1943,

    As a Sergeant with Company F of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, he participated in the Normandy Invasion. For his outstanding achievements, the American government presented him with several awards such as the Purple Heart, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.

  • Mr. Maurice GIMBEL who will be represented by his proud family since he is unfortunately no longer with us.
    Mr. Gimbel joined the U.S. Army in January 1943. As a Staff Sergeant with the 62nd General Hospital, he participated in the Liberation of Northern France. For his outstanding achievements, the American government presented him with several awards such as the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
  • Mr. Lionel LEITNER who joined the U.S. Army in July 1944,

    As a Second Lieutenant with the 398th Bomb Group, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
    For his outstanding achievements, the American government presented him with several awards such as the Purple Heart, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon and three bronze stars, the Air Medal, and the Oak Leaf Cluster.
